Thinking Activity on " The scarlet Letter"

Hello, Everyone!

Welcome to my blog. Here I am going to give answer of questions which is my about the competition between the " Kya kehna " movie and " The scarlet letter" and given by Heenama' am.

1.What are the names of the protagonists in both the works?

Ans : In the novel "The scarlet letter" the protagonist character was Hester and in "Kya Kehna "movie the protagonist character was Priya.

2.Write their story in brief.

Ans : Both movie and novel has a major and most scene was that adultery scene .both were dealing with same kind of situation and events.

About the Novel:-

It was a story of a woman by a man.we can see concept of woman.A social frame was used who has broken. There is a Hester named leading character.she was married yet she leaves alone because her husband goes away for few years.when she leaves alone she falls in love with ARTHUR DIMMESDALE and had a child, but dimmesdale don't accepted her in publically.so Hester has to suffers alot from society .she stands strongly against all problems.she cares her child alone.

About "Kya Kehna movie":-

It was also a story of woman's struggle and courageous Nature.so Priya was the protagonist of the movie. In her graduation time she falls in love with a boy named Rahul who belongs to upper class. Here we find love between middle class girl and upper class boy. They both have an affair and Priya became pregnat and  rahul denied to accept this. Though Priya decided to gave birth to her child and she becomes ready to face society. After that Ajay named boy accepted Priya with whatever she was.

3.What is the role played by society in Hester’s life?

Ans :In movie society also played a  role. All people raised a question on hester, her relationship and daughter pearl. They use to told with some bad name of Hester. When hester goes  in market she was insulted by the people and also blown drum to told about Hester and public awared about it. Till the end people use to ask hester that who was your lover? But hester never spoke name of Dimmesdale. Yet hester hasn't fear of society she has done whatever she wants.

4.What is the role played by society in Priya’s life?

Ans : The society played a vital role in Priya's life, because when rahul refused her to accept Priya with child.she decided to gave birth to her child then it becomes very difficult to sustain against society. They were directly questions upon our identity. Their sight of looking towards us was changed. At the end of the movie,at the end of year performance she confessed whatever she has done or what she wants.

5.Compare and contrast the male characters, Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, Rahul, and Ajay.

Ans : if we are talking about male characters in movie and novel then, first I would like to talk about Roger chillingworth; he was jealous man and left his wife for some years and when he comes back he comes to know about his wife's relationship with another man.now he want to take revenge of it.If we talked about Arthur dimmesdale then he loves hester by heart but he can't conffess it into public because of some reason, maybe he was afraid of society's rule but he never leaves Hester. So,he was reflected as kind and good character. Now let's talk about Rahul and Ajay.so,Rahul belong to upper class and because of status he denied Priya and he left her. whatever he has done was not good .while Ajay has a major role because he decided to accept Priya with whatever she is.

6.Compare and contrast ‘The scaffold scene in The Scarlet Letter’ and ‘a year-end performance in Kya Kehna in which a group of students performs a play on Priya and her pregnancy’.

Ans : In both scene both have to face society and have to give answer to people's questions.both are Adultery but difference was hester never take name of his lover infront of society and Priya asked all among the audience. They both accepted their child alone.

7.What are the reasons that Arthur Dimmesdale and Rahul do not come forward to accept their fatherhood? How do you they differ and what are the similarities?

Ans : I don't know much about specific reason of roger but I thought that maybe both want leave away from their responsibility. They don't want to take responsibility.

8.What is the role played by Chillingworth in Hester’s life? Why do you think he wanted to take revenge on Hester and Dimmesdale?

Ans : According to me,first chillingworth married with Hester and then he goes away from her and when he comes back he comes to know About Hester's relationship with dimmesdale and he wanted to take revenge with dimmesdale, it's was only aim of his life.

9.What is the role played by Rahul’s mother in Priya’s life? Why do you think she wants to take revenge on Priya?

Ans : In the movie Rahul's mother played a negative role.she doesn't like priya and she believes that her son hasn't did anything wrong. There is only fault of Priya so she has to pay alone .she thought my son was innocent and why he pays for it.she doesn't want to marry her son with Priya. Is it fair with priya? Is it for only that she don't like Priya? If this kind of people in our society then we never able to get justice from the society.

10.Write a note on class difference in Kya Kehna.

Ans : In movie we can see class difference between middle class and upper class. As Priya belongs to middle class and rahul belongs to upper class family.maybe Rahul denied to accept Priya because of to keep his status or standards in society.Normally the society blames on middle class. Those who belongs to upper class they don't have to much worry about it but the middle class doesn't get enough justice from society.so,class difference affects alot in anyone's life.

11.Why do you think the director has lifted the character of Ajay to the ideal state? Is it possible in real life? What are the reasons of your YES or NO?

Ans : The director has lifted the character of Ajay to the ideal state maybe because he want to make happy ending of movie, but it's not possible in real life in contemporary time it's not possible.

12.How do you see Hester and Priya as individuals?

Ans : If we say about both woman character as individuals then both are strong ,courageous and brave woman.both doesn't depend on anyone. They complete their responsibility. Here we find that Priya get support of his family members whereas Hester hasn't any kind of family.she remains alone. They don't loose their self against society's view or people. They stands and fights with it.

13. Write a critical note on the end of the movie and the novel. Why do you think the novelist has not given happy ending?

Ans : According to me , whatever happens with Hester with this Hawthorne shows that time's society, mind of that time's people.we are now forced to think about that age.

Thinking activity on " The waste Land".

Hello ! Everyone

Welcome to my blog. Here I am going to give answers of questions which was a
part of my thinking activity and given by Dilip sir, so here is sir's blog link
https://blog.dilipbarad.com/2014/10/presentations-on-ts-eliots-waste-land.html?m=1

THE WASTELAND By T.S.Eliot it shows the ruined image of society. The barreness of life and growth of only materialism leads toward the meaninglessness of life.

1) What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzche's views? or Has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling mytho-historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

Eliot stands for Regressive, backward looking as it tries to find answers of contemporary malaise in Upanishad, Buddhism and Christianity.

On the other side Nietzche stands for progressvie and forward looking, in giving solution to the problem of contemporary crises in faith and self.

In compared to Neitzche's thought, yes Eliot is regressive but it doesn't mean that he only rises question on his contemporary society, he also tries to give way of solution rather than the answers. Cycle of time always moving and when History start repeating one must have to look back and try to learn that what are mistakes our ancestor did and now when time comes to us how we will deal with it?

It is certain and right that new questions's answer we couldn't find in Upanishad, Buddhism and christinity but the way of living, understanding towards any situation one can devlop.

So we can conclude that it is also right that problems of contemporary crisis' solution is in faith and self but, the level of faith and understanding of self must be necessary. It comes from reading of mytho-historical and religious thought. Eliot achived that unversality of thought.

2) Prior to the speech,Gustaf HellstrΓΆm of the Swedish Academy made these remarks:

What are your views regarding these comments? Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy and satisfied life? or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition'?

No, I'm not agree with Eliot's view that 'Salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition' and supression or contol over desire lead toward any better life. In stend of that it's better to giving free vent to desires.
For proving this point i want to give example of one letter's fragment by Osho.

You cannot do this if you condmn it because condemnation leads to repression

and it is repression that pushes desires and emotions into the unconscious.

Really, it is be cause of repression and unconscious,

and this division is at the root of all confict.

3) Write about allusions to the Indian thoughts in 'The Waste Land'. (Where, How and Why are the Indian thoughts referred?)

There is an image or central theme of poem is death in life is eastern  philosophy in westeland, rebirth and the continuation pf an endless cycle of suffering in a world, and many other refrences is there...

1.The Fire sermon
The fire and sermon is name of sermon given by Buddha. Gayasisa is the place where buddha prech the fire sermon about achieving libration from suffering through detachment from the five senses and mind, by that Eliot also wants to convey a message tp stay detached from all body and sense's desire.

2.What the Thunder said
There is refrence pf Upanishad in this Prajapti
Spoke in thunder 'aakashvani' to devotees are pointed out the way of salvation. Eliot shows the way of spiritual re-birth on the basis of wisdom of India.

"Rock and no water and the sandy road
The road winding above among the mountains"

Climbing a painful mountain pass through pain and agony and after that you reach destination the feeling of Air is Shantih.

3.River Ganga and Himalaya
Eliot refers to Wisdom of India for spiritual salvation of modern humanity. Holly river Ganga known for its purity and also for purification , and Himalaya is known for spirituality and peace.

"Ganga was sunken, and the limp leaves
Waited for rain, while the black clouds
Gathered far distant, over Himavant".

4.Three Da
Datta.. Give
Dayadhvam... Sympathize
Damyata...control

Da..Da..Da.. As reminder to practice self control, giving and compassion.

5.Shantih Mantra
Path pf knowldge is always painful and peace comes after knowing something that is the real Shantih. Thus Eliot ends Wasteland with hope.

Bilingualism, Trilingualism and multingualism

Bilingualism, Trilingualism and multingualism

Bilingualism and multilingualism are highly complex and multidimensional linguistic, psychological, and social behaviors. This chapter discusses the key issues at the intersection of bilingualism, multilingualism, and second language (L2) acquisition.

Growing interest in multilingual acquisition in recent years has challenged some of the existing approaches and premises that heretofore were widely accepted in bilingualism and second‐language acquisition (SLA) research.

bilingualism/multilingualism and looking at the variability and complexity of their characteristics as they are nested in wider social contexts. It then discusses the related theoretical, methodological, and applied issues that contribute to the understanding of bilingual/multilingual acquisition.

The chapter focuses on three major issues in SLA: the construct of language proficiency; the effect of age of exposure to L2 acquisition and additional language acquisition; and cross‐linguistic influences among languages.
It finally discusses the influence of, first language (L1) that has gained substantial attention in sla.

Debate about the costs and benefits of bi- and multilingualism at an individual and societal level has been raging for more than 100 years. Research on bilingual and trilingual first language acquisition has shown that children can acquire multiple languages from birth without adverse effects. Current research adopts a holistic view of the phenomenon.

Psycholinguistic, social psychological, psychological, and econometric studies show clear benefits for bi- and multilinguals: higher levels of cognitive control, creativity, tolerance of ambiguity, open-mindedness, cultural empathy, income, and less communicative anxiety.

Language preferences for the communication of emotions among bi- and multilinguals are linked to the emotional resonance of the languages, which has consequences for psychotherapy with bi- and multilinguals.

Interpretation of ten short modernist  poems

Here is my interpretation of ten short poems, with modern metaphors and symbols.
 # Characteristics of Modern Age:
*Meta- narrative
*claical allusion
*Inter textual
*free verse
* open from
*Breakdown
*Loss of faith
*Rejection of old norms
*Meaningless
*complex
*Reconstruction of new values

1.) ‘The Embankment‘- T. E. Hulme

Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy,
In a flash of gold heels on the hard pavement.
Now see I
That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy.
Oh, God, make small
The old star-eaten blanket of the sky,
That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.
The analysis of this short poem available on internet says: Fallen Gentleman reflects on his pas and how he found pleasure in worldly social activities such as musical gathering and dances. Here “Flash of Gold Heels” represents the beautiful women and “hard pavement” represents the hard and rough side of the society. But the darker side of this phrase “Flash of Gold Heels with Hard Pavement” is though she is beautiful but she is prostitute as well. Here is a symbol like “star-eaten blanket” shows that usually stars represent beauty in the darker sky and also we can say that star represents the hope in the situation of darkness.

2.) "Darkness" - Joseph Campbell

Darkness
I stop to watch a star shine
        in the boghole -
A star no longer, but a silver
         ribbon of light.
I look at it and pass on.

In this poem poet talks about the night scene and the importance of stars in the dark sky. There is a word “star” shows the beauty of stars in the dark sky and without stars sky is all dark and “darkness” itself is the symbol of “fall”. But star is a symbol of brightness and hope. So here we can say that shine of a star and a silver ribbon represents the positive side of this age.

3.) 'Image' - Edward Storer
 Forsaken lovers,
Burning to a chaste white moon
Upon strange Pyres of loneliness and
       drought.
The dictionary meaning of “forsaken” is “to give up” so here “forsaken lovers” represents the fall. Here is a phrase “forsaken lovers burning” so here we can say that they are burning in lost as T.S Eliot discussed this in the third part “the fire sermon” in this part he discussed about the people who are burning and lost in spiritual degradation

4.) "In a station of the Metro" - Ezra Pound
The apparition of these faces in the Crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough
Here “Metro” itself is a symbol of Modernism and the crowd represents the people. So here we can say that it represents the people who are living physically but mentally they all are dead because of their daily hasty schedule. “Bough” is a branch of a tree, and here he used “black bough” which means the dead branch of a tree (culture). Here society is a tree and branch is culture.
5.) 'The Pool' - Hilda Doolittle

    Are you alive?
       I touch you
You quiver trembling like a sea-fish
I cover you with my net
       What are you- banded one?

Whenever we hear the word “pool” then there is only one thing came in our mind and that is a place where we can swim or have fun. But here we can relate “sea fish” with T.S Eliot’s “The Wasteland” in which he discussed about the unreal cities like “London”. As we all know that water is in pool is not flowing like river which symbolizes the stability of society and the rigidness of people mind.

6.) "Insouciance" – Richard Aldington

In and out of the dreary trenches
       Trudging cheerily under the stars
I make for myself little poems
Delicate as a flock of doves
       They fly away like white-winged
        Doves.
In this poem there are many images like “dreary trenches” which means a dark hole or dug in the ground, it is used as a metaphors for the ups and downs of life, or we can say that life is a two side of one coin one is negative and one is positive. There are other words like “trudging” and “cheerily” which represents the image of a person who has to do his work but he don’t want to do. Here poet focused upon the ups and downs of life during the rough time of a person.

7.) Morning at the Window - T. S. Eliot

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaid
Sprouting despondently at area gates.

The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

In this poem there are many words like “rattling”, “damp souls”, “despondently”, “fog”, “twisted faces”, “fear”, “aimless”. Here we can find negativity I each line which represents the darker side. In this poem we can find images of “dullness” and “dead spirit”. Here we  can refer  the first part “the burial of dead” of T.S Eliot’s “The Wasteland” in this poem also we can find negativity all around. In this part Eliot used the image of “dull roots”, “snow” and “a heap of broken images”.

8.) The Red Wheelbarrow -William Carlos Williams

so much depends
 upon
a red wheel
barrow
 glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chicken.
Here we can say that poet used the word “wheel”, “rain”, “water” and “white chicken”. The dictionary meaning of “wheel borrows” is “a small, one wheeled cart with handles at one end for transporting small loads. It Is like “bullock cart” but bullock cart is pushed by bull but wheel borrow may be pushed by man for transporting little goods and luggage's. Here we can see that the poet uses “chicken” which is the younger one of hen/cock. So we can say that it is a poem about the sacrifice of a younger one in this modern age.
9.) Anecdote of the Jar- Wallace Stevens

I placed a jar in Tennessee,
And round it was, upon a hill.
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.
The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild.
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air.
It took dominion everywhere.
The jar was gray and bare.
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.

The poem is about the control over civilization of a state or a place. Here poet discussed about the state “Tennessee” in United States of America. In this poem poet placed a jar on the hill. After some time jar at hill owns the place slowly and steadily. Through this line poet wants to say that how an outsider comes as different place and owns that place or we can say that an outsider made its place on that place slowly and steadily. There is one word “wilderness” which represents the unsettled way of an outsider. There is a phrase “sprawled outsider” which means to spread out in a disorderly fashion.

10.) ‘l (a‘- E. E. Cummings

The title of the poem “A leaf falls on loneliness” shows itself the state of being alone and solitude. There is a word “fall” which represents the state of dullness. It can be fall of civilization, individual’s hope or fall of anything else. If a leaf falls from tree then the fallen leaf become lonely. In Modernist Literature we can see fall of spirituality and also fall of hope. Loneliness represents the separation from the entire world. So here we can say that this poem represents the state of separation from the entire world and also represents the state of self centeredness.
